How to Measure Your Dog for a Soft Cone
The steps below will help you choose the right size the first time. A properly fitted soft recovery cone helps prevent licking and chewing while keeping your dog comfortable during recovery.
What you'll need to measure:
- Neck circumference: Measure around your dog’s neck where a collar naturally sits.
- Depth: Measure from the collar line to the tip of your dog’s nose.

Cuddle Cone size chart
Match your pet’s neck measurement and cone depth to the chart below. If your pet is between sizes or has a longer snout, sizing up may be best.

|---|---|---|
| X-Small | 6.5 – 10 | 4.5 |
| Small | 7 – 11 | 5 |
| Medium | 9.5 – 13 | 7 |
| Large | 11.5 – 15 | 8.5 |
| X-Large | 13.5 – 17 | 10 |
| 2XL | 18 – 24 | 11 |

FAQ: Measuring & Sizing Your Dog’s Soft Recovery Cone
How do I measure my dog for the right cone size?
Use a soft measuring tape. Alternatively, you can take your dog’s collar off and measure the length to obtain the neck circumference. Measure your dog’s neck circumference where their collar normally sits, then measure from the neck to the tip of the nose—this is the depth needed. Choose the size that fits the neck measurement and is long enough to help prevent licking.
How far should a dog cone extend past the nose?
In most cases, the cone should reach to the tip of the nose or slightly beyond. If your dog can still reach the incision (especially on the back legs, tail base, or hips), you may need a longer size.
What if my dog is between sizes?
If you’re between sizes, choose based on what matters most:
- If the neck measurement is between sizes, go with the size that will fit comfortably without being too tight.
- If the length is between sizes (and your dog is trying hard to reach the area), it’s usually best to size up for more coverage.

My dog has thick fur or a “fluffy” neck—should I size up?
Sometimes, yes. Thick coats can make neck measurements a little tricky and can cause snugness. If your measurement is close to the top end of a size range, sizing up can improve comfort.
My dog is short-nosed (Frenchie, Boston Terrier, Pug). Do they need a different size?
Sometimes, short-nosed breeds need a smaller depth than a long-nosed dog with the same neck size. Focus on the neck fit first, then choose the length that prevents licking while still being comfortable. If you need a custom size, please visit our Etsy shop and send us a message.
How tight should the cone be?
Snug enough that it stays in place, but not too tight. You should be able to fit two fingers between the cone and your dog’s neck. If your dog coughs, gags, or seems uncomfortable, loosen the fit. Using the nylon loops to hold your pet's well-fitting collar will help keep the cone in place and ensure a correct fit.
How do I know if the cone is working (preventing licking)?
Watch for a few minutes after putting it on. If your dog can still reach the incision with their tongue, the cone may need more length, a better fit at the neck, or a different type of cone/collar.
What if my dog can still reach the incision even with the cone on?
Some dogs are surprisingly flexible. If they can still reach the area, try:
- Adjusting the fit so it sits securely at the neck
- Choosing a longer size
- Using vet-approved extra protection (a recovery suit/bandage, or even a t-shirt) depending on the incision location
How long does shipping take?
